WHAT IS PETROCHEMISTRY?
It is possible to make petroleum from any kind of organic matter under suitable conditions. The concentration of organic matter is not very high in original deposits, but petroleum and natural gas evolved in places such as sealed-off porous sand stones. Petroleum, produced over millions of years by natural changes in organic matter, accumulates beneath the earth's surface in large quantities.
The petroleum industry began to grow significantly in the late 1940's and especially during the World War II. The demand for synthetic materials increased, and this rising demand was met by replacing costly and less efficient products with these synthetic materials. This caused petrochemical processing and petrochemistry to develop into a major industries. There is a countless list of products that are produced from refined petroleum such as fuels, plastics, fertilizers, fabrics and textiles. There is rarely a day in anyone`s life where they will not use a product produced from petroleum.
